Govt may provide free cochlear implants for children of poor families

Government may provide free cochlear implants to under-privileged children in order for them to lead a normal life. The affected children will receive cochlear implants worth about RM 70,000 each. However, the move is still in planning stage. Around one to three babies have hearing difficulties out of every 1,000 new-borns and early intervention will allow them to grow up normally and contribute effectively towards nation building. The cost of treating 100 children is estimated around RM7 million per year.
