All private hospitals in Malaysia need to be licensed under the Private Healthcare Facilities & Services Act 1998 by the Ministry of Health. The Act defines “private hospital” as any premises, other than a government hospital or institution, used or intended to be used for the reception, lodging, treatment and care of persons who require medical treatment or suffer from any disease or who require dental treatment that requires hospitalisation.
Many of the private hospitals in Malaysia have gained internationally recognised accreditation such as the Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation and the Malaysian Society for Quality in Health (MSQH) accreditation. Both these accreditations are recognised members of the International Accreditation Federation Council (IAFC), an organisation under the International Society for Quality in Healthcare (ISQuA).
